The ocean is something that has always fascinated me, but also completely terrified me. When I was a kid, family vacations included trips to California and Hawaii, where the beach was a place I made new friends and soaked up the sun and fresh air, a favorite pastime of mine still today.
Then one time a rip tide swept my brother and me out, fully clothed and unprepared. We weren’t in much danger, but as a child it was scary. What I really remember more than anything is getting to buy a new outfit on the pier in Santa Cruz. I mean really is there anything better than the feeling of wearing a new outfit?
But back to the ocean…. Throughout the years, I had friends who surfed and I was content sitting on the beach watching, in awe of the ocean and also completely unable to comprehend how anyone ever learned how to surf.
I'm a farm girl from Iowa, it wasn’t a part of my everyday life. The waves of cornfields as they sway in the wind are beautiful, but not quite the same.
Fast forward to 2020, back when I met the Trevelise family on the beach in Costa Rica. (Read “How We Met” HERE ) I literally lived on the beach, steps from the ocean and watched surfers everyday for 2 months. But my fear kept me from even trying. Until one day, my friend Rachel said, “grab a board, we’re paddling out.” And so I did. I trusted her and I trusted that I was strong enough.
I surrendered to the unknown possibilities and learned to read the ocean tides a bit better and flow with them instead of fighting with something I couldn’t change or control. But that all took some patience and practice, and of course a great teacher.
I understand the basic concept of low and high tide and its connection to the moon and gravitational force, but explaining it in any more detail than that is beyond me.
The sun also plays a part, along with the coastline, ocean depth and many other factors. What most can visibly see is the water level comes further up on the beach at high tide and stays further out on the beach during low tide.
Just like the waves ebb and flow between low and high tide, so does our energy. We experience periods of low energy and high energy, and it is important to honor these shifts in order to set your dreams in motion.
Ebbs Allow Space for Dreams to take Shape
As the tide regresses, it wipes away the prints in the sand or clears the slate. Allowing for a fresh start, to begin something new. To place those intentions out there and let the tide carry our dreams out to sea. During this time, we rest so that when it's time to act, we are ready to make the move and watch our dreams take shape.
At Austin Arts Academy, we felt this shift in energy following the high energy pace of recital time and the much needed slow down that followed. During this time, a big dream of Rebekah’s was able to take shape in the form of a studio space for our Summer 2022 Music, Art, and Dance classes.
Since then, we have been able to offer more classes at our Steiner Studio Space at 10801 Rush Rd and continue to grow. Check out the video of our studio space! Click Here

Space Allows Energy to Flow Naturally
Rebekah and all of us at Austin Arts Academy surrendered to the unknown possibilities and learned that we couldn’t force a studio space to happen, it flowed to us naturally and in a way that may have looked a bit different from what we had imagined, but was exactly what we needed.
The Support of A Great Teacher
And all of this happened not only because we honored the art of slowing down, but again because of a great teacher. Rebekah Trevelise has always been the kind of person that can take something that looks terrifying and make it look easy, like surfing, running a marathon or scaling a business.
Her passion is effortless and she trusts that everyone has what it takes to be a great teacher and accomplish their dreams. And she’ll support you every step of the way to achieving your dreams, even if you can’t comprehend how you’ll ever get there yourself.
It’s what makes Austin Arts Academy and all of its teachers unique. Each teacher is supported and equipped with all the tools they need to make lessons fun and engaging, a complete lesson experience that is completely different from the old model of drills and memorization.
